Green Mythelini is a long-term environmental campaign with the aim of reducing environmental pollution, especially plastic waste, while promoting a more conscious use of resources such as water and energy through youth education initiatives.
This project works to establish the infrastructure necessary to carryout recycling activities in local schools and universities, as well as develop and implement an educational curriculum to promote environmental protection objectives.
- Create recycling infrastructure
- Develop environmental protection curriculum
- Activate local youth in environmentally conscious ways of living
- Reduce the number of plastics reaching landfill and waterways
With our work we try to make a contribution to a cleaner environment – not only on Lesvos.
Lesvos is an island in the Aegean Sea off the Turkish coast that, like the entire region, is particularly hard hit by the effects of climate change.
Clean drinking water is becoming less available, summers are getting hotter and drier, and ecosystems on and around the island are suffering from the endless amounts of waste.
According to a 2020 report by WWF Greece, about 81.9% of municipal solid waste in Greece goes to landfill.
This also includes plastic waste that is not collected separately, but disposed of together with municipal waste in the residual waste bin.
A significant proportion of the landfills are operated illegally and do not meet the necessary requirements, which is why the EU imposed a fine of 10 million euros on Greece in 2014.
Research by the Archipelagos Institute, which has taken more than 1,000 samples from different coasts of the Greek islands over 4 years, shows that due to Greece’s poor waste management, there is not a stretch of beach or cubic meter of sea water in the region that is not polluted with plastic.
So it’s high time to do something about it!
All our activities – especially our project “Green Mythelini” consider the topic in different ways.
